‘Cancel Culture’ grew out of a frustration and the need to respond to the pressure of our time to erase everything that makes us unique.

We live in a time where being different — in conviction, behaviour, identity or appearance — is erased or suppressed by the people around us, by social norms and institutions. What is demanded is conformity, invisibility: critical thinking, loud voices, proud identities, non-conforming bodies — everything that gives character is not accepted, and must be covered up or surgically removed.

I’m thinking not only of the physical, like wrinkles and skin folds, but also of people who think differently, and of politically critical voices. We are increasingly being constrained and smoothed over, like glaze poured over these forms. It’s a movement we live inside.
