Renate Frotscher

Renate Frotscher is a ceramic artist who works with hand built forms and textured surfaces to counter the polished, corrected world she knew from digital design. After years in environments where everything could be adjusted, filtered or perfected, she turned to clay to bring back friction, texture and physical presence.

Artistic Approach

Her sculptures draw on Baroque and Rococo vocabulary. She rebuilds these familiar forms through gesture instead of traditional decorative methods. Curls, leaves and floral structures are shaped with her fingertips and palms. The pressure marks, ridges and irregularities remain visible, giving the work a rough, volcanic quality.

This approach turns ornament into a record of movement and touch. It makes the act of making part of the final form, rather than something hidden or corrected afterwards.

The result is a sculptural language where elegance and raw material meet. Texture and gesture remain fully present in the final surface, never polished away.

Background

Before focusing on ceramics, Renate worked for many years in digital design, earning several international awards. This experience informs her interest in tactility, texture and visible gesture. She is based in France, where she develops her sculptural work in stoneware and porcelain.

Atelier

My studio is located in the Cantal region of France, where I produce both sculptural works and collectible design objects. Everything is built by hand using stoneware and porcelain. No molds, no casting, no industrial processes. Each piece grows slowly through pressure, coils and layered construction, leaving intentional traces of the making process on the surface.

I work with high-temperature stoneware for its structural strength and raw texture, and with porcelain for delicate decorations and its sharp detail. All pieces are fired in an electric kiln with controlled schedules suited to my clay bodies and surface treatments.

The atelier is set up for both one-of-a-kind works and small series. I handle all stages in-house: building, drying, glazing, firing, finishing and assembly for lighting or furniture. This allows consistent quality control and makes it possible to develop commissions, custom dimensions and project-specific pieces.
